About My Art

Brenda Ferguson
photo by Molly Ferguson, September 12, 2002

I'm a self-taught artist and have worked in several mediums. Sometimes I combine mediums. A few years ago I was delighted to happen upon the wonderful, messy medium of soft pastels. I enjoy its ease and immediacy of use and intense color possibilities. Soft pastels are an extension of my fingers so I am able to get them to do just what I want... most of the time.

I was born and raised in Rumford, Maine, graduating from Rumford High School.

I received my BS in Speech/Language Pathology and Elementary Education from the University of Maine in Farmington in 1981.

I received my MA in Education of the Deaf from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC in 1983. (My hearing is fully functional.)

Fluent in sign language, I taught deaf children in Augusta and Fairfield, Maine for five years before moving out to the hills of Dixmont, Maine. I was a Speech and Language Clinician at the Etna Dixmont School before leaving in June 2002 to pursue a full-time career as an artist.

My studio is in my home.

My School Visits
In addition to painting, as time allows, I visit schools and show students how I create my art. It is all hands on and the students have an opportunity to paint with pastels. To see more click here.
