I used alcohol once again for the underpainting on this piece.
I began by roughing in the flow of lines for the antique
wooden spools with a few pastels. I was primarily concerned
with laying in some of the subtle bottom spools and shadows
and placement of a few topmost spools. I loosely brushed
over these pastel lines with an alcohol-soaked brush in the
same direction of the strokes to maintain the movement of
the various diagonal lines.

The alcohol underpainting

Once the alcohol dried, I developed the painting with many
layers of pastel to completion.
