| In 1982, the city of Fayetteville was proclaimed "The City of Dogwoods." The following spring the first Dogwood Festival was held. Today the festival calls nearly 30 events its own and entertains approximately 100,000 people. Everything from sporting events to concerts, street dances to children's events, is part of the something for everyone philosophy of the festival. Commemorative & Memorial Dogwood Trees Planting a tree is a meaningful way to remember and celebrate the lives of the people we love. It's an enduring gift for the future that also contributes to the health and beauty of our environment. The gift of a tree is suitable to recognize special events such as a birth, graduation, wedding, anniversary or the unfortunate passing of a loved one or family pet. Create a living memorial to preserve a memory for present and future generations to reflect upon and enjoy. We will send an acknowledgment card to you immediately and we will send a commemorative certificate, suitable for framing, to the person you designate acknowledging your gift. Fall planting provides for the most suitable conditions to assure each tree has the opportunity to thrive in our area. For this reason, the following options are available: For a contribution of $75: You or the one you gift is invited to the Botanical Garden to pick up the 6 foot Dogwood tree at our special October planting event. This will allow you or the one you gift to plant at home. For a contribution of $100: The Cape Fear Botanical Garden is creating a Dogwood Cultivar Collection to preserve the many beautiful species of Dogwood trees. A memorial tree for this project is planted by the garden during the special planting event in the fall. Your tree will be among those planted and will provide a lovely place to visit. For your donation, you or the honoree will receive a certificate indicating that a tree is be planted, and information about the Garden's registry of Commemorative and Memorial Dogwood Trees. Also For a contribution of $100: You may elect that the tree be planted during the fall in conjunction with the many city landscape projects that include preservation efforts along Cross Creek.
