~ About Brenda's Workshops ~
June 5 and 6, 2007
Artist-in-Residence
at Phippsburg Elementary School.

Alongside my working set, the students' pastels were all packed
and ready to travel south
to beautiful Phippsburg, Maine.

I began my sessions sharing my own original art, discussing my technique and demonstrating it for students.

The students then had time to put the techniques into practice and experiment with a new medium.

I find it gratifying to see children of all ages and skill levels actively engaged and creating.

We ended our sessions with quiet reflection.
This was a chance for students to view what their classmates had
created and to offer positive comments.

May you enjoy their artwork.

Fourth graders were challenged to paint portraits.
Children were paired with a partner who sat across
from them. The students took turns for 5 minutes
at a time first painting and then posing.

They met their challenge beautifully.

During my two days with the students
I discussed the use of color...

...the inclusion of light and anchoring the subject
to a surface using shadows...

...and the idea of using our eyes carefully
to really paint what we see.

The students were eager to take the techniques
they learned and put them into practice.
What a wonderful job they did.

All of their artwork was displayed
in the hallways
for everyone to enjoy.

And thank you Phippsburg Elementary School
for inviting me to share my art with you!

Brenda is a pastel painter first and foremost. When time allows, she shares her artistic skills and unique way of looking at color with students so that they can create a work of art during the workshop.

A school visit from the pastel painter, Brenda Ferguson, typically consists of three eighty minute classroom workshops, usually two in the morning and one in the afternoon. Having worked in public schools for many years, Brenda knows how to connect with students. A sample workshop is above.

Brenda provides the pastels, professional grade pastel paper and also the subject matter for the still lifes. The fee is $500/day (or $400/half-day) plus travel from Dixmont, Maine.
