After studying my reference photo,
I started with this color palette.
As the painting progressed
I added a few more colors.
The Progression

Stage one consists of determining the placement and composition
within the framework of the paper. I then lay in the initial layers of pastels
beginning with the darkest values.

Stage two involves refining the composition and more layering of colors
to cover the surface of the paper and to create depth and form.

The final stages include refining colors, sharpening some and losing other edges,
heightening the contrast where needed, and adding details.

The Interpretation

Rather than printing an image, I often paint directly from my computer monitor
using reference photos I've taken myself. I found this casual ewe years ago
at the Commonground Agricultural Fair.
