The five steps showing the technique of combining acrylic paint and pastel.
|||||
Step 1 - I began with a charcoal sketch on sanded paper to determine the composition and placement of the peppers. I then sprayed this layer with a workable fixative so the charcoal would not muddy the paints.

Step 2 - I thinned the acrylic paint somewhat with water and added the dark-shadowed areas along with some color for the red peppers.

Step 3 - After the first application of acrylic was dry, I finished painting the green of the peppers. There was very little detail at this stage.

Step 4 - When the paint was completely dry, I switched mediums and with my pastels, worked from left to right.

Step 5 - I continued layering with pastels, though with a light touch so as not to completely cover the painted color already laid down. This modeled and defined the peppers and completed the painting.
