Olsen's Pears
16" x 13", 2004
The three steps showing
the technique of combining pastel with watercolor.
Step 1 - The initial sketch is blocked in loosely with pastel.
Step 2 - More layers are added with watercolor washed in during three stages. First, I painted the dark blue background. Then, when that was dry, I added the green in varying degrees for all the pears. After it dried, I finally added the blush colors and cerulean blue patches on the shadowed sections of the pears.
Step 3 - I defined the pears by sharpening the contrast and finally adding details.
I think it helps me to have a limited time to complete a painting. It leaves no time to pick and poke at it. It stays fresh and not overworked. This is one of my favorite paintings for that reason.
