The four steps showing the technique of combining watercolor, pastel, and gold leaf.
Step 1 - I began with a loose pastel sketch on the sanded paper to determine the composition and placement of the gold rocks. I then sprayed this layer with a workable fixative.
Step 2 - I added an orange watercolor wash over the entire painting. While wet, I sprinkled salt and splashed water to obtain a mottled textural effect on the rocks.
Step 3 - After the watercolor was completely dry, I began the process of adding the gold leaf in certain areas. This involved painting sizing onto the rocks I wanted gold. After this dried, I carefully placed the sheets of the metallic leaf over the sized areas and burnished them with a soft brush to affix and eliminate any excess leaf.
Step 4 - I then went in and began layering with my pastels to complete the painting.
I am excited about the idea of working more with these metallic leafs. Carefully planned and strategically placed, they add a subtle shimmer to a painting that seems to move with the light.
